The Hull & District Province of the RAOB GLE held their annual "Bullnose" service, in honour of the City of Hull's fallen seamen, on Sunday, August 30th, 2026. The event was held at the Hull Fishing Heritage Centre on Hessle Road in Hull and was attended by many dignitaries, including the area's MP, the Hon. Emma Hardy MP, as well as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Hull, Cllr Daren Hale (whose ward encompasses the Hessle Road area).
The event also saw great representation from the Buffaloes, as the Grand Primo, Bro Peter Coton ROH, attended with his good lady and gave a speech, as well as the Provincial Grand Primo of the Hull & District Province, Bro Philip Birch KOM,and his deputy, Bro Bob Scott ROH. Aiding them in delivering the service were the Master of Ceremonies, Bro George L Stewart ROH, and the province chaplain, Rev. Allen Bagshawe.
The city of Hull has a long history with the sea, with the fishing industry forming the backbone of many of the city's communities in the early-to-mid twentieth century. The fishing industry was a notoriously dangerous one, and more than 6,000 fishermen left Hull's ports never to return, with the worst period of loss coming in 1968 with the 'Triple Trawler Tragedy' when the St Romanus, the Kingston Peridot, and the Ross Cleveland were lost in three weeks, with 58 deaths across the three vessels, and only one survivor.
These losses are remembered by the annual service as well as a plaque on St Andrews Dock in Hull, and a statue on the corner of Boulevard and Hessle Road, both of which were funded in part by the RAOB.
